Morgan and Bode Miller are expanding their family.

"We're finally on our last pregnancy," Bode says as Morgan, who is due in November and plans to accept a home birth, adds: "We're at the cease line."
They are parents to sons Nash, 6, Easton, two, eighteen-month-one-time twins Asher and Aksel, and daughter Emeline, who drowned at 19 months onetime in June 2018. Bode is also dad to daughter Dace, 13, and son Nate, viii, from 2 previous relationships.
"After losing Emmy, nosotros both felt like we wanted to endeavor for a girl. You know, there's obviously no replacing kids," Bode shares. "All of ours are so unique that it'south ever a surprise, just and so we had the identical twin boys [in 2019] and we were kind of like, 'Whoa, maybe, maybe that's the end for us.' "
Morgan, who learned she was pregnant at three-and-a-half weeks forth, says, "We constantly knew that nosotros had more than space in our hearts to give more love. Kids require a lot of attention and a lot of dearest. Nosotros have a lot of attending and a lot of honey to give, but nosotros feel like this will be the final 1 for us to be able to put all of ourselves into. So that mode, all of them still become a bunch of love and attending. And we're not stretching ourselves too thin."

Three years later, the devastating memories of June 9, 2018, are never gone, but time has helped heal the pain of Emmy's death. "It's not something you tin can ever go away from," says Morgan, who on that day had dropped by their neighbor's house with Emmy in California'southward Orange County and was having tea when she all of a sudden noticed her little girl was nowhere in sight. Emmy had wandered out through an open door to the lawn and in the shallow end of the pool. Paramedics arrived and rushed Emmy to the hospital, where she died the next solar day.
For the PEOPLE shoot in April, Morgan, Bode and their four sons, all of whom split their time between California and Montana, released dozens of butterflies in memory of Emmy.
"When you lose someone like that, when you lose a child, you lot really recognize how special [that parent-child relationship] is. And non that we were ungrateful for what we had, our kids are absolutely incredible. But we merely had and then much more love to give and nosotros had and then much more love we wanted to requite," Morgan says of her pregnancy, which they will find out the sexual activity of the baby shortly.
"We have a mixed purse of hoping for a boy or a daughter," Morgan shares as the former Olympian, who retired from downhill skiing in 2017, adds, "I'one thousand probably the nearly in the center where I'll just exist happy for a babe."
The couple also recalls their kids' reactions when they establish out another sibling will exist joining the family unit. "It was across the board. We had a lot of different stuff. Nosotros had shock from Nate and Dace," Bode remembers.
"We were as well reprimanded, like 'Another one? Hey, this is enough.' But in one case everyone got their heads wrapped effectually it, they were actually excited," Morgan says. "We did find out that it'due south one babe and not two. There was definitely a niggling scrap of, I don't want to say worry, merely we're going to say worry that information technology was ii, like twins. It's a lot. As their family expands with the new improver, Emmy will always be present in their lives as Bode says his little girl "nevertheless feels very much like a role of the family."
"She was incredibly stubborn and was an awesome, awesome kid to be effectually. But definitely taught me a lot almost patience because she was the near stubborn. We had a really great, unique [father-girl] relationship, a really special 1," he shares.
The Millers continue to advocate for h2o rubber awareness in memory of Emmy. "We piece of work on it throughout the yr, but definitely in summertime months," Morgan says. "Even COVID, everyone was home and kids were home from school. Kids were abode from daycare and drowning rates went up drastically. Drowning is still the number one crusade of decease for children under age 5.
